Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer for World Pancreatic Cancer Day
Every November we recognize World Pancreatic Cancer Day. We use this day to bring awareness and spread more knowledge around pancreatic cancer. This knowledge allows for more early detection. Early detection is crucial in cancer diagnosis, especially with pancreatic cancer. Recognizing the warning signs increases the chances of catching the disease early, which can significantly improve outcomes.
Abdominal or Back Pain: Many individuals report pain that starts in the abdomen and radiates to the back. This discomfort is often due to a tumor pressing on nearby organs or the spine. The pain may worsen when lying down.
Digestive Issues: Symptoms such as loss of appetite, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal swelling may occur due to a tumor pressing against the stomach or small intestine.
Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) is a significant symptom of pancreatic cancer. Although painless, it should not be ignored and requires immediate medical attention.
Unexplained Weight Loss: Unintentional weight loss is a common cancer symptom. If you're losing weight without trying, it's important to discuss this with your doctor.
New-Onset Diabetes: Pancreatic cancer can lead to sudden-onset diabetes, unrelated to weight. This occurs because the cancer destroys insulin-producing cells, causing elevated blood sugar levels.
If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor. While early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is rare, raising awareness and staying informed can improve detection and save lives.
